What is the distance between Porto Seguro and Caraíva?

A: There are two answers to this question. The shorter route is 65 km long. It involves taking the ferry between Porto Seguro and Arraial d’Ajuda and usually takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. The longer route is 105 km long. This route is entirely by land and usually takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Both routes include a stretch of dirt road approximately 32 km long.

Does the transfer offered by Bahia Transfer use the shorter route?

A: It depends on ferry traffic on the day of the transfer. During high season, the average waiting time in line for the ferry crossing often exceeds 2 hours. In these situations, the transfer follows the longer route.

A: No. The 32km dirt road section lies within an Environmental Protection Area (APA) and therefore cannot be paved. The region is protected by federal law.

Does the transfer drop passengers off in the village of Caraíva?

A: All transfers drop passengers off at the Nova Caraíva dock, where they board canoes for a 10-minute crossing across the calm waters of the Caraíva River to the village landing.

Does the crossing operate 24 hours a day?

A: The crossing operates daily from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The canoes do not run on a fixed schedule (e.g., every hour); they depart once they reach capacity, which varies.

How much does the crossing cost?

A: The current price (Aug/26) is BRL 10.00 per passenger for a one-way trip.

Is there a luggage weight limit?

A: Generally, the canoes accommodate passengers with one piece of hand luggage and one medium-sized suitcase. If you have a large amount of luggage, you will likely need to pay the equivalent of an extra passenger’s fare to accommodate all your bags in the same canoe.

What is it like arriving in the village of Caraíva?

A: The charming village of Caraíva has buggies that operate as taxis, as well as horse-drawn carts (which usually transport only luggage). Upon arrival, hire one of these modes of transport. It is advisable to contact your guesthouse beforehand to find out about these details.

We paid for the full service from Salvador Airport to Morro de São Paulo. We got off to a bad start, with a 40-minute delay. On the way back, we were informed that the service would be changed to the land-sea service (a cheaper service), which would increase the transfer time. Additionally, we were charged a fee for using the dock (supposedly, you pay for the full service, including taxes). To top it all off, the new service was delayed by five hours, compared to the 2.5-hour transfer we had booked. I do not recommend this service at all; the operator's responses were also unsatisfactory.
